Can Cows See 360?

Published in Animal Vision 1 min read

Cows can see almost 360 degrees, especially when their heads are down while grazing.

As prey animals, cattle have evolved with exceptional peripheral vision to detect potential predators. Their eyes are positioned on the sides of their heads, providing a wide field of view. When a cow is grazing with its head lowered, this positioning allows for a nearly complete 360-degree view of its surroundings. This wide field of view helps them spot danger from almost any direction. However, they do have a small blind spot directly in front of them and directly behind them.
