What to do with Star Fragments in BotW?

Published in BotW Materials 2 mins read

Star Fragments in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are primarily used for upgrading various pieces of armor. These valuable materials are essential for enhancing your defensive gear, making Link stronger and more resilient as you explore Hyrule.

Primary Use: Armor Upgrades

Star Fragments are a crucial component for improving many powerful armor sets at the Great Fairy Fountains. When you visit a Great Fairy, you can use Star Fragments, alongside other materials and Rupees, to increase an armor piece's defense rating and sometimes unlock set bonuses. This makes them highly sought-after for players looking to maximize their gear's potential.

Obtaining Star Fragments

Unlike many common materials found throughout Hyrule, Star Fragments cannot be purchased from merchants. Instead, they must be acquired through specific in-game activities:

  • Falling from the Sky: Star Fragments appear as shooting stars that fall from the sky every night, specifically between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM in game time. Players can observe these falling stars and then travel to their landing spot to collect them before they disappear. This often involves finding a high vantage point to spot the trajectory.
  • Completing the "My Hero" Side Quest: A Star Fragment is awarded upon the successful completion of the "My Hero" side quest, which involves reaching a certain threshold of shrines discovered.
