How to Format Chrome OS?

Published in Chrome OS Reset 2 mins read

Formatting Chrome OS, also known as a factory reset or powerwash, completely erases all data and settings, returning your Chromebook to its original state. This is useful for troubleshooting problems, selling your Chromebook, or preparing it for a new user. There are two main methods:

Method 1: Powerwash (Factory Reset) Using the Keyboard

This method is the quickest and most convenient way to format your Chrome OS.

  1. Sign out of your Chromebook: Ensure you've saved all important data, as this process will erase everything.

  2. Press and hold the keyboard shortcut: Simultaneously press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R.

  3. Select "Restart": A confirmation message will appear. Select "Restart" to begin the powerwash process.

  4. Confirm Powerwash: Your Chromebook will restart and guide you through the powerwash process. This will erase all your data and settings. Once complete, you'll be presented with the initial setup screen.

Method 2: Powerwash (Factory Reset) Using the Physical Buttons

This method is useful if the keyboard shortcut doesn't work.

  1. Turn off your Chromebook completely.

  2. Press and hold the 'Refresh' (circular arrow) key. This key is usually located above the number keys on the keyboard.

  3. While holding the 'Refresh' key, press and hold the 'Power' button.

  4. Continue holding both keys until you see a "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" message appear on the screen.

  5. Follow on-screen instructions: The Chromebook will then guide you through the recovery process, essentially performing a factory reset.

Formatting External Storage Devices on Chrome OS

If you want to format a USB drive or SD card connected to your Chromebook, the process differs from formatting the Chrome OS itself.

  1. Open the Files app.

  2. Locate the drive: It will appear on the left-hand side of the Files app window.

  3. Right-click the drive.

  4. Select "Format device".

  5. Enter a drive name (optional).

  6. Select the file system: Choose a suitable file system, such as FAT32 (for compatibility with most devices) or exFAT (for larger files).

  7. Confirm the formatting. This will erase all data on the drive.

Important Note: Always back up your data before performing a factory reset or formatting any storage device.
