Where is the lock icon on Google Chrome?

Published in Chrome Security Indicators 3 mins read

The traditional padlock icon, which once signified a secure connection in Google Chrome's address bar, has been replaced. Approximately a year ago, Google Chrome updated its interface, replacing the familiar padlock icon with a tune or double-line icon (often referred to as the "Site information" or "Tune" icon) to provide more comprehensive details about the website you are visiting.

Understanding the New Site Information Icon

Google replaced the padlock icon to better inform users about website security and privacy settings, as the padlock alone was often misunderstood to mean a site was entirely "safe" rather than just having a secure HTTPS connection. The new icon prompts users to click for a broader range of site information, including connection details, cookie usage, and granted permissions.

Location of the Icon

You will find the Site Information icon (which replaced the padlock) on the far left of the address bar in Google Chrome, directly preceding the website's URL.

What the New Icon Indicates

While the new icon no longer looks like a padlock, it still provides access to crucial security information:

  • Connection Security: It indicates whether your connection to the site is secure (HTTPS) or not.
  • Site Settings: It allows you to view and manage permissions for the website, such as camera, microphone, or notification access.
  • Cookies: You can check and manage cookies set by the website.

Accessing Site Information and Security Details

To check the security of your connection or manage site settings, simply click on the icon located to the left of the website address in your Chrome browser.

  1. Locate the Icon: In the Chrome address bar, look for the tune/double-line icon on the far left.
  2. Click the Icon: Click on this icon.
  3. View Information: A dropdown menu will appear, providing details about the site's connection security (e.g., "Connection is secure"), information on cookies, and options for site settings and permissions.

Interpreting Connection Status

The appearance of the icon next to the URL helps you quickly understand the security status of the website:

Icon Meaning Action/Information
Tune/Double Line (Secure) Indicates that the site uses HTTPS, meaning the connection to the website is secure and private. Your information (like passwords or credit card numbers) is protected. Click for site details, certificate information, cookies, and site settings.
Information (Non-secure/Warning) Indicates that the site is not using a secure connection (HTTP), or there's a problem with its certificate, meaning your information might not be private. Be cautious. Avoid entering sensitive information. Click for details on why the connection is not secure.
Danger (Dangerous/Not Secure) Indicates that the site is dangerous, deceptive, or contains malware. Chrome has blocked the site. Do not proceed to the site. If you landed here unexpectedly, close the tab immediately.

By understanding and utilizing the new Site Information icon, you can stay informed about your online security and privacy while browsing with Google Chrome.
