How Do You Set Veneers?

Published in Dental Veneers Procedure 2 mins read

Setting veneers involves a precise bonding process to securely attach the thin shells to the natural teeth. This final stage ensures the veneers are permanently in place, providing a durable and aesthetic result.

The Veneer Bonding Process

When your custom-made dental veneers are ready, the dentist will proceed with the bonding process. This typically follows preparation steps like cleaning and potentially slightly shaping the tooth surface. The key steps in setting the veneers include:

  • Surface Preparation: The dentist will apply an acidic gel that dissolves minerals on the surface of each tooth so that there is a rough surface for the veneer to bond to solidly. This process, known as etching, creates microscopic pores and an irregular surface that enhances the adhesion of the bonding agent.
  • Cementing: Cementing the veneers in place is a quick process. A dental bonding agent or cement is applied to the etched tooth surface and the inner surface of the veneer.
  • Curing: The veneer is then carefully positioned onto the tooth. A special light is used, which speeds the hardening process of the bonding cement. This light typically emits a specific wavelength (often blue light) that activates photoinitiators in the cement, causing it to cure rapidly and form a strong bond between the tooth and the veneer.

After the veneers are set, the dentist will remove any excess cement, check your bite, and make any necessary final adjustments to ensure comfort and proper fit.
