What is Catalase?

Catalase is a common enzyme found in nearly all living organisms exposed to oxygen that catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) into water (H₂O) and oxygen (O₂). It's crucial for protecting cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Catalase's Role in Protecting Cells

Hydrogen peroxide, a byproduct of many metabolic processes, is harmful to cells. Catalase prevents this damage by accelerating the following reaction:

2 H₂O₂ → 2 H₂O + O₂

This enzymatic reaction effectively neutralizes the toxic hydrogen peroxide, converting it into harmless water and oxygen. Without catalase, the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide would lead to oxidative stress, damaging cellular components like DNA, proteins, and lipids.
