What Can FarmBot Grow?

Published in FarmBot Crop Compatibility 2 mins read

FarmBot is designed to cultivate a variety of small to medium-sized crops, particularly those that grow in a relatively predictable shape, making it an efficient system for automated gardening.

Optimal Crop Characteristics

FarmBot excels at growing plants that are not only compact but also maintain a consistent form throughout their growth cycle. This ensures the system's tools can effectively manage and care for each plant. Ideal crops for FarmBot are typically:

  • Small to Medium in Size: Perfectly suited for the FarmBot's bed dimensions and the reach of its gantry.
  • Predictable Shape: Allows for consistent interaction with the automated tools for planting, watering, and monitoring, ensuring efficient and effective care.

Examples of Suitable Crops

A wide range of common and highly suitable crops for FarmBot includes various leafy greens and smaller root vegetables:

  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Arugula
  • Chard
  • Beets
  • Bok Choy

These crops thrive within the automated environment, benefiting from precise watering, nutrient delivery, and monitoring.

Crops Not Suitable for FarmBot

Due to physical limitations, FarmBot cannot currently accommodate all types of crops. Specifically, tall crops that exceed the gantry's height of approximately 0.5 meters (about 1.6 feet) are not suitable for a FarmBot's bed. Examples of such crops include:

  • Corn
  • Sunflowers

These taller plants would interfere with the FarmBot's overhead gantry system, preventing proper operation and automated care.
