Denis Villeneuve did not direct Sicario 2, officially known as Sicario: Day of the Soldado, primarily due to a demanding scheduling conflict with another high-profile film project.
Director's Prior Engagements
At the time Sicario: Day of the Soldado was being developed and produced, acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve was deeply immersed in the creation of the ambitious science fiction sequel, Blade Runner 2049. This major undertaking required his full attention and commitment, making it logistically impossible for him to take on the directorial role for the Sicario follow-up.
Villeneuve's intense schedule for Blade Runner 2049 ensured he could not participate in the making of the Sicario sequel, which subsequently saw Stefano Sollima step in as director. This scheduling challenge also likely contributed to the absence of Emily Blunt, who starred as Kate Macer in the original Sicario, from the second installment.
