What Is a Convex Bank?

A convex bank is a specific feature found in meandering rivers, defined as the bank located opposite the concave bank within a river bend. Unlike its counterpart, a convex bank is characterized by the accumulation of sediment, meaning that the opposite of erosion happens here.

Understanding Convex Banks

River meanders, which are winding curves or loops in a river's course, exhibit distinct geomorphological features on their inner and outer bends. The convex bank forms on the inner curve of a meander, where the water flow is typically slower.

Formation and Characteristics

The formation of a convex bank is intrinsically linked to the hydrodynamics of a meandering river:

  • Slower Water Velocity: As a river rounds a bend, the water on the inner curve moves at a slower speed compared to the outer curve.

  • Point Bars: The landforms created by this deposition on the inner curve are often called point bars. These are crescent-shaped ridges of sediment that migrate downstream as the meander itself evolves.
