How Can I Hide Instagram Conversations?

Published in Instagram Message Management 4 mins read

To hide Instagram conversations without deleting them, you can move them from your Primary inbox to the General folder. This effectively de-prioritizes the chat, moving it out of your main view.

Instagram doesn't feature a dedicated "hide" or "archive" button for individual conversations like some other messaging apps. However, moving a chat to your General folder is the closest equivalent, allowing you to remove it from your main "Primary" inbox while keeping all messages intact.

Moving Instagram Chats to the General Folder

This method shifts less urgent or less frequent conversations away from your main chat list, making your Primary inbox cleaner and more focused.

Steps to move a conversation to General:

  1. Open Instagram and navigate to your Direct Message (DM) inbox by tapping the paper airplane icon in the top right corner.
  2. Locate the conversation you wish to move.
  3. On iOS (iPhones/iPads): Swipe left on the conversation.
  4. On Android phones: Press and hold your finger on the conversation.
  5. From the options that appear, tap "Move to General."

Once moved, the conversation will no longer appear in your Primary inbox.

What Happens When You Move a Chat to General?

  • Messages are not deleted: All your past messages and media within the conversation remain accessible.
  • Relocated: The entire chat thread is moved to a separate "General" section of your DM inbox.
  • Notification behavior: By default, you typically won't receive push notifications for new messages from chats in your General folder, reducing interruptions. However, you can adjust your notification settings for General messages within Instagram's settings.

Accessing and Unhiding Messages from General

If you want to access your messages again or move a conversation back to your main inbox, it's a straightforward process.

Steps to unhide (move back to Primary) a conversation:

  1. Go to your Instagram Direct Message inbox.
  2. At the top of your inbox, you will see tabs like "Primary" and "General." Tap on the "General" tab.
  3. Locate the conversation you wish to move back.
  4. On iOS: Swipe left on the conversation.
  5. On Android: Press and hold your finger on the conversation.
  6. Tap "Move to Primary."

The conversation will instantly reappear in your Primary inbox.

Primary vs. General Inbox Comparison

Understanding the distinction between these two sections can help you manage your conversations more effectively.

Feature Primary Inbox General Inbox
Visibility Main, default inbox for important conversations Separate section for less urgent conversations
Notifications Generally receives push notifications by default Often muted by default; fewer notifications
Purpose Priority messages, close contacts, active chats Other messages, less frequent interactions, non-priority
Message Status Shows unread counts and message previews prominently May show fewer unread indicators, less prominent

Other Ways to Manage Instagram Messages (Beyond Hiding)

While moving to General is the closest to "hiding," Instagram offers other tools to manage your message experience.

Muting Notifications for a Conversation

If you only want to stop receiving alerts from a specific chat without moving it, you can mute its notifications.

  • How to Mute:
    1. Open the Instagram conversation.
    2. Tap on the other person's username at the very top of the chat screen.
    3. Under the "Privacy and Safety" section, you'll find options like "Mute Messages" and "Mute Call Notifications." Toggle these on as desired.

Deleting an Entire Conversation

For conversations you no longer need, you have the option to delete them permanently from your inbox. Keep in mind this action is irreversible and removes the entire chat history for you.

  • How to Delete:
    1. Go to your Instagram Direct Message inbox.
    2. On iOS: Swipe left on the conversation.
    3. On Android: Press and hold your finger on the conversation.
    4. Tap the "Delete" option.

Restricting an Account

If you're looking to manage interactions with a specific user, restricting their account is a more comprehensive step. This doesn't hide existing conversations directly but impacts how future messages and interactions appear.

  • What it does:
    • Their comments on your posts will only be visible to them unless you approve them.
    • Their direct messages will be moved to your Message Requests folder, and you won't receive notifications for them. They won't know if you've read their messages.
  • How to Restrict:
    1. Go to the profile of the user you wish to restrict.
    2. Tap the three horizontal dots (iOS) or vertical dots (Android) in the top right corner.
    3. Select "Restrict."
