How to set up an iPhone without an old phone?

Published in iPhone Setup 4 mins read

Setting up a new iPhone without an old device is a straightforward process that allows you to configure your new phone from scratch. This method is ideal if you're a first-time iPhone user, replacing a lost or broken device, or simply prefer a clean start.

Setting Up Your New iPhone Manually

When you unbox and power on your new iPhone for the first time, it will guide you through a series of setup screens. You won't need another device to complete this process; all the necessary steps can be done directly on the new iPhone.

Initial Steps on Your New iPhone

  1. Power On: Press and hold the power button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. "Hello" Screen: Once the iPhone starts up, you'll see a "Hello" screen in multiple languages. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to proceed.
  3. Language and Region: Select your preferred language and then your country or region. This affects settings like date, time, and contacts.
  4. Quick Start Screen: You'll then be presented with the "Quick Start" screen. This option is used for transferring data from an old iPhone. Since you're setting up without an old device, you'll choose the alternative.
    • Tap Set Up Without Another Device: This crucial option allows you to begin the manual setup process directly on your new iPhone.
    • Accessibility Options: On this screen, you can also tap the blue accessibility button to configure accessibility features like VoiceOver, Zoom, Display Accommodations, and more, before proceeding with the standard setup.

Connecting to a Network

After choosing to set up without another device, your iPhone will prompt you to connect to the internet.

  • Wi-Fi Network: Select a Wi-Fi network and enter the password. A strong Wi-Fi connection is recommended for a smooth setup process, as it may download updates or necessary configurations.
  • Cellular Data: If you have an active SIM card or eSIM activated with a cellular plan, you may also have the option to use cellular data for setup.

Security and Personalization

Once connected to the internet, you'll configure your device's security and basic personalization.

  • Face ID or Touch ID: Follow the on-screen instructions to set up Face ID (for iPhones with no Home button) or Touch ID (for iPhones with a Home button). This allows you to unlock your phone and authenticate purchases securely with your face or fingerprint. You can choose to set this up later if you prefer.
  • Create a Passcode: You will be required to create a six-digit passcode. This is a crucial security measure and acts as a backup unlock method if Face ID or Touch ID fails or isn't used. You can explore passcode options like custom numeric or alphanumeric codes.

Apps & Data Transfer Options

This is where you explicitly choose not to transfer data from an old device.

  • You'll see options like "Restore from iCloud Backup," "Restore from Mac or PC," "Transfer Directly from iPhone," and "Don't Transfer Apps & Data."
  • Tap Don't Transfer Apps & Data: Select this option to set up your iPhone as a completely new device without bringing over content from a previous phone.

Apple ID and Essential Services

An Apple ID is essential for downloading apps, using iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and other Apple services.

  • Sign In with Your Apple ID: If you have an existing Apple ID, enter your Apple ID and password.
  • Create a New Apple ID: If you don't have an Apple ID, you can create one directly on your iPhone. This involves entering your birth date, name, and creating an email address that will serve as your Apple ID, or using an existing email address.
  • iCloud and Find My: After signing in, you'll be prompted to set up iCloud and Find My. It's highly recommended to enable Find My, as it helps locate your device if it's lost or stolen.
  • Siri: Configure Siri by following the voice prompts. You can choose to enable "Hey Siri" for hands-free activation.
  • Apple Pay: Set up Apple Pay by adding your credit or debit cards if you plan to use this feature for contactless payments or online purchases. You can skip this and set it up later.
  • Screen Time: Choose to set up Screen Time, which allows you to monitor and manage your usage, or set content and privacy restrictions.
  • App Analytics & Data Sharing: Decide whether to share diagnostics and usage data with Apple and app developers.

Finalizing Setup

  • Display Zoom: Select your preferred display zoom level (Standard or Zoomed).
  • Welcome to iPhone: After completing all these steps, you'll see the "Welcome to iPhone" screen. Swipe up to access your Home Screen. Your iPhone is now set up and ready to use!
