What is the abandoned platform at South Kensington?

Published in London Underground History 2 mins read

South Kensington station once featured not one, but two platforms that were taken out of public use, adapting to the evolving needs of the London Underground network. While both were abandoned, one was subsequently demolished to make way for essential station improvements.

Historical Context of Abandoned Platforms

The abandonment of these platforms was part of a broader rationalization and modernization effort within the London Underground, particularly affecting the District and Metropolitan lines that pass through South Kensington. As passenger flows and operational requirements changed, certain infrastructure became redundant or was repurposed for new developments.

The Former Platforms

South Kensington station originally had more platforms serving its various lines. Over time, two specific platforms were taken out of operation:

  1. Eastbound Metropolitan Railway (MR) Platform (Number 1): This platform, which once served eastbound Metropolitan Railway trains, was decommissioned in January 1966. Following its closure, the associated tracks were also removed.
  2. Westbound District Railway (DR) Platform (Number 4): This platform, serving westbound District Railway trains, was taken out of use later, in March 1969. Like Platform 1, its tracks were also removed. Crucially, Platform 4 faced a different fate; it was demolished in the early 1970s to facilitate the installation of escalators providing access to the deeper-level Piccadilly line platforms.

The removal of these platforms and their tracks allowed for more efficient use of space within the busy station complex, particularly to improve interchange facilities for passengers.

Summary of Abandoned Platforms at South Kensington

Platform Number Line Served (Original) Direction Date Taken Out of Use Subsequent Fate
1 Metropolitan Railway Eastbound January 1966 Tracks removed
4 District Railway Westbound March 1969 Demolished in early 1970s for Piccadilly Line escalators

Today, visitors to South Kensington tube station might still discern remnants or altered spaces where these platforms once stood, particularly around the areas connecting to the District and Piccadilly lines, a testament to the station's continuous evolution.
