Who are the two blue wizards in Lord of the Rings?

Published in Middle-earth Wizards 1 min read

The two Blue Wizards in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, often associated with Lord of the Rings, are Alatar and Pallando.

These two Istari (Wizards) are among the least known of their order, as very little information about their deeds and travels has been extensively documented. They are distinct from the more prominent wizards like Gandalf, Saruman, and Radagast.

The Blue Wizards: Alatar and Pallando

While much remains a mystery regarding their activities, some details about their names and potential roles are known:

Wizard Name Other Name (Quenya) Meaning of Other Name
Alatar Morinehtar "Darkness-slayer"
Pallando Rómestámo "East-helper"

According to the limited information available, they journeyed into the East of Middle-earth, beyond the lands detailed in The Lord of the Rings. Their purpose there is believed to have been to counter the influence of Sauron and potentially aid the various peoples residing in those distant lands.
