What are the three types of NCC?

Published in National Cadet Corps India 3 mins read

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is primarily divided into three main types based on the branches of the Indian Armed Forces: the Army Wing, the Navy Wing, and the Air Wing.

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) serves as the youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces, offering voluntary enrolment to students in schools and colleges. Its core mission is to cultivate qualities such as character, camaraderie, discipline, a secular outlook, an adventurous spirit, and the ideals of selfless service among young citizens. The NCC operates through various units structured according to distinct service branches.

The Three Wings of NCC

The NCC provides comprehensive training and opportunities across three specialized wings, each corresponding to a major branch of the Indian Armed Forces:

1. Army Wing

The Army Wing represents the largest component of the NCC. It provides cadets with training that closely mirrors the disciplines and operations of the Indian Army. Cadets gain proficiency in areas such as infantry drill, map reading, field craft, and weapon training, alongside various other military subjects.

  • Structure and Strength: Within the Army Wing, each battalion or unit is typically organized into platoons or companies (coy), with cadet strength varying by the size and composition of these sub-units.

2. Navy Wing

The Navy Wing of the NCC focuses on naval subjects and maritime activities, offering a unique training experience. Cadets are trained in seamanship, navigation, boat pulling, sailing, and naval communications, preparing them for potential careers within the Indian Navy or the merchant navy.

  • Structure and Strength: For senior division boys, each Battalion (BN) or unit within the Navy Wing is structured into 4 to 8 divisions. Each of these divisions is typically composed of 50 cadets.

3. Air Wing

The Air Wing of the NCC provides an engaging pathway for cadets with an interest in aviation and aerospace. Training encompasses activities like aeromodelling, gliding, and powered flying, along with general aviation subjects, offering valuable insights into the operations of the Indian Air Force.

  • Structure and Strength: For both senior division boys and senior wing girls, each unit in the Air Wing is composed of at least 2 fleets. Each of these fleets consists of 100 cadets.

Comparative Overview of NCC Wings

The table below summarizes the structural organization and typical strength details across the three NCC wings:
