How to Clean a Roller After Primer?

Published in Painting 2 mins read

The process of cleaning a roller after using primer depends on the type of primer used, but generally involves removing excess primer, rinsing with water (for water-based primers), and thoroughly drying the roller.

Here's a breakdown of the steps:

  1. Remove Excess Primer:

    • Use a paint scraper, putty knife, or a specialized roller cleaning tool to remove as much primer as possible from the roller cover back into the primer can. This minimizes waste and makes the cleaning process easier.
  2. Identify Primer Type:

    • Determine whether the primer is water-based (latex or acrylic) or oil-based. This will dictate the cleaning solvent needed. Most primers are water-based and can be cleaned with water.
  3. Cleaning Water-Based Primer:

    • Rinse with Water: Hold the roller under running water, squeezing and rotating the roller cover to dislodge the primer.
    • Wash with Soap (Optional): If necessary, use a mild soap (like dish soap) to help remove stubborn primer residue.
    • Rinse Thoroughly: Continue rinsing until the water runs clear, ensuring all soap is removed.
  4. Cleaning Oil-Based Primer:

    • Remove Excess Primer: As detailed in step 1.
    • Clean with Mineral Spirits/Paint Thinner: Pour a small amount of mineral spirits or paint thinner into a container. Dip the roller cover into the solvent, working it in to dissolve the oil-based primer.
    • Rinse: Remove the roller and squeeze out the dirty thinner into a separate container for disposal.
    • Final Wash: Wash the roller with warm soapy water to remove any remaining solvent.
    • Dispose of Solvent Properly: Never pour used mineral spirits/paint thinner down the drain. Follow local regulations for hazardous waste disposal.
  5. Drying the Roller:

    • Spin the Roller: Use a roller spinner (available at most paint supply stores) or flick the roller to remove excess water or solvent.
    • Air Dry: Stand the roller upright or hang it to air dry completely. Make sure the roller cover is fully dry before storing it to prevent mildew or stiffness.
  6. Storage: Once the roller is fully dry, store it in a plastic bag or its original packaging to keep it clean and dust-free for future use.
