How to Add Sand to Pool Filter?

Published in Pool Maintenance 2 mins read

Adding sand to your pool filter involves carefully pouring the correct type and amount of sand into the filter tank. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Turn off the pump and filter system: Before you begin, ensure that the pump and filter system are completely turned off to prevent any accidents.

  2. Locate the filter tank: The filter tank is usually a large, cylindrical container. Identify where the sand needs to be added, typically through an opening at the top.

  3. Remove the multiport valve or top cover: Carefully detach the multiport valve or top cover of the filter tank. Consult your filter's manual for specific instructions on how to do this.

  4. Inspect the standpipe (if applicable): Some filters have a standpipe in the center. If so, make sure it's properly positioned and covered to prevent sand from entering it.

  5. Prepare the sand: Use only pool-grade silica filter sand. The amount needed will depend on the size and model of your filter; refer to your filter's manual for the correct quantity.

  6. Add the sand:

    • Position one corner of a bag of pool-grade silica filter sand over the mouth of the tank.
    • Make a small cut in the corner of the bag to allow sand to slowly fall into the tank.
    • Work slowly and carefully to prevent any sand from spilling.
    • Repeat until you have added the amount of sand needed for your filter.
  7. Replace the multiport valve or top cover: Carefully reattach the multiport valve or top cover, ensuring a tight seal.

  8. Backwash the filter: After adding sand, it's crucial to backwash the filter to remove any dust or debris from the new sand. This will prevent cloudiness in the pool water.

  9. Rinse the filter: After backwashing, rinse the filter for a short period to settle the sand bed.

  10. Return to normal filtration: Finally, return the filter system to its normal filtration mode.

Important Considerations:

  • Type of Sand: Always use pool-grade silica filter sand. Other types of sand can damage the filter or affect water quality.
  • Quantity: Using too much or too little sand can impair filter performance. Consult your filter's manual for the correct amount.
  • Safety: Ensure the pump is off before opening the filter tank.
  • Even Distribution: Try to distribute the sand evenly within the filter tank.

By following these steps carefully, you can successfully add sand to your pool filter and maintain optimal water quality.
