Where Does Salt Grow?

Published in Salt Formation and Extraction 1 min read

Salt, in its natural form, doesn't "grow" like plants; instead, it's primarily found in specific locations. Actually, most of the world's salt is found in our oceans, and humans have been extracting salt from the sea for a very long time.

Harvesting Salt from the Sea

Salt is not grown but rather harvested, mainly from oceans. Here's how it's typically done:

  • Seawater is directed into shallow basins, known as salt pans or ponds.
  • The water in these pans evaporates due to the heat of the sun and wind.
  • As the water evaporates, the salt concentration increases.
  • Eventually, the water is completely gone, leaving behind salt crystals.
  • These crystals are then harvested and processed for use.

Therefore, instead of "growing," salt is extracted from sources where it's naturally concentrated, most notably the ocean.
