India is overwhelmingly the most Sikh country in the world, home to the vast majority of the global Sikh population.
India: The Global Center of Sikhism
The Sikh religion originated in the Punjab region of India, and today, India continues to be the heartland of the Sikh community. Approximately 90 percent of the total Sikh population worldwide resides within its borders.
The global Sikh population is estimated to be between 26 and 30 million people. Of this number, a substantial 24 to 28 million Sikhs live in India, making it the country with by far the largest Sikh population. This significant concentration underscores India's pivotal role in the Sikh faith, both historically and in contemporary times.
The majority of Sikhs in India are concentrated in the state of Punjab, where Sikhism originated and where many of its holiest sites are located. However, significant Sikh communities can also be found in other parts of India and around the globe.
Region | Estimated Sikh Population (Millions) |
